Adam vol.57/55

The large dome with its cupola and column niches to the drum may be that of Michelangelo's St Peter's, and the viewpoint is possibly taken from beyond the Porta Fabbricia, from the Orso Inceronati. There is another, clearer view of the dome from much the same viewpoint in the Clerk Collection, Scotland (Clerk 97), although the arrangement of the foreground is different. The invented composition of this drawing probably places it better in the category of a capriccio than a topographical view.
