Purpose:Capriccio or possibly view of a richly wooded landscape; in a hollow is a round-headed archway with deeply recessed opening, possibly an underground grotto.

Notes

This rather contrived composition, probably more invented than topographical, was possibly made by Robert Adam during one of his country trips from Rome in the late summer of 1755. A similar, also possibly invented, landscape is found in Adam vol.57/138.
